Child Focused Poverty Alleviation Through Women:
The CSA project in Malur started in January 2006. In this area, CSA focuses on the upliftment of children. At present, there are 10 evening activity centres with over 500 kids who play, study and participate in workshops on various things like personality development. They are also provided with sports gear. In the future it will be transformed into a children’s club. There are also 16 self help groups for women with about 239 women actively participating in it. Regular discussions programs on income generation, methods of savings, loan sanctions etc are also held. Soon, they plan to provide skill-training to the women in varied fields like agriculture, livestock, vermicompost, organic pesticide etc.

HOSKOTE

CSA runs “Chetana” a Child Focused Community Development Project in 14 Villages in Hoskote Taluk of Bangalore Rural District. The project is supported through Churches Council for Child and Youth Care (CCCYC) by Kindernothilfe ( KNH,Children Need Help), Germany. The project commenced on April 2002.       As the name suggests, the project aims at improving socio-economic indicators of children in marginalized communities on a sustainable basis. The lives of the children can be ensured to be good on a continuous basis only if we improve the socio-economic conditions of the marginalized communities ( namely parents and others) in which the children live.      Keeping this in mind, the components implemented in the Chetana Project are:

1. Nutrition and pre-school programme for children below 5 years.
2. Educational support programmes like provision of educational materials and activity centres for supplementary education.
3. Formation of Children’s Clubs to enable children to access their basic rights.
4. Self-Help groups of women for self-development, family development and ultimately child development.
5. Formation and handing over of responsibilities to the Community Based Organizations (CBOs) to manage the project even after CSA withdraws from the area.
6. Micro Finance and Micro enterprise development activities for improving incomes.
7. Watershed development.

ADILABAD

“Jeevadan” A Child Focused Community Development Project, was initiated by CSA through the support of Churches Council for Child and Youth Care (CCCYC) by Kindernothilfe, Germany in January 2005 after a preparatory phase which commenced on January 2004. The objective of the preparatory phase was to thoroughly understand the needs of the children, their parents and others in the village.      Jeevandan covers 15 villages under the Nirmal Mandal in Adilabad district ( which is 210 kms from Hyderabad city). As in the Chetana Project, the project aims at improving socio-economic indicators of children in marginalized communities on a sustainable basis by empowering their parents and others in their communities.      With this motive in mind, a lot of programmes have been initiated in the area for the benefit of the villagers:

1. Nutrition and pre-school programme for children below 5 years.
2. Educational support programmes like provision of educational materials and activity centres for supplementary education.
3. Formation of Children’s Clubs to enable children to access their basic rights.

Besides these effectively functioning programmes, a few components are yet in the planning stage which include Self-Help Groups of women, formation and handing over of responsibilities to the Community Based Organizations, Micro Finance and Micro Enterprise Development and Watershed development.

RAJENDRANAGAR PROJECT AREA

The CSA volunteers visited Rajendranagar slum as part of a Vikas program aimed at sensitising them towards child labour and related issues. As a result in 1999, Rajendranagar was made a project area with the full support of the management.There are three projects here:

1. Child Sponsorship programme: Through sponsorship, children are 

given books, stationary items and uniforms and a part of their tuitions fees is also paid. CSA volunteers also provide Supplementary education [tuitions] in the evening. Along with this programme, personality development workshops, cultural competitions, etc. are also conducted in order to encourage the children.2. Self Help Groups: Presently, 29 Self Help groups function there and some of them are as old as 4 years. 3. Housing Project: The 51^st house is under construction now! The Project Officer Mr. Manjunath says that there has been a lot of improvement in the life of people from the time CSA started working there. The involvement of more people and benefactors testifies this claim KENCHENPALAYAOne major project area of CSA is Kenchenpalaya, which is located in Kegullahalli Panchayath at Kumbalagodu in Mysore road (Bangalore). The activities in this area began in the year 2001. Over the years, CSA has added a number of development projects in the area including;

1. A Creche takes care of 14 children whose parents are labourers
2. A Garment Training cum Production Unit, where 18 women work and earn a living. In the long run, CSA plan to leave the management of the unit to the women of the village
3. A Monthly Training Program on the technical aspects of garment industry has been of help by securing employment for 56 women.
4. 11 Self Help Groups (SHG) around the village encourage people to save money and undertake income-generating activities. It is important to note that these groups are linked to various banks. The SHGs will be withdrawn from the management of CSA in 3-4 years once they become self sufficient.
